The Ted Lasso Effect… Takeaways and Viewpoint of a Business Owner

I have a confession to make…

We cut the “cable cord” several months ago and I’m not looking back! Streaming services offer so many different options. BUT, at the same time, I’ll admit, it can be confusing trying to decide which streaming platform works best for you and your family. Richard and I have been slowly building our favorites and we have found a nice rhythm to our streaming service choices.

Now, I must admit that keeping cable television might have been the easy route, because having cable tv isn’t hard… you just turn on the tv with the remote and instant tv shows appear on your screen. Ultimately, the expense of a large cable bill coupled with internet costs just didn’t make sense for us. So, we decided to let it go.

Streaming tv services can require a bit of extra navigation but it’s definitely worth the journey. One of our biggest finds in our new tv watching journey was finding Apple TV. The quality of the shows that we have watched on this streaming platform has made this streaming service a “keeper” for us. So you might be wondering where I’m going with all this tv talk…

Today, this blog post will be centered around ONE key show that is a “must see” on my list of recommended series, Ted Lasso. I must admit that I was inspired by Ted, and I would like to share a few takeaways as we launch headlong into 2024.

For those of you who have never experienced this show, Ted Lasso, the main character, is a US football coach who was recruited, and hired to come to the UK to coach a professional futbol (soccer) team. Ted is an experienced football coach who has the power to motivate his players and has found great success in his career prior to moving overseas.

It’s easy to see as this series begins, that the new coaching path of coaching Futbol is a great challenge for Ted as he knows very little about the game of futbol and his family is now 3,000 miles away.

Richard and I were instantly hooked into the show with the vast array of personalities that Ted interacts with in his newly chosen career path. Many of these challenging personalities often would throw up roadblocks along the way, as Ted and his coaching staff, worked to create a winning, cohesive team. Ted was steadfast in his mission.

Before I go any further, it is not my intent, to retell the entire series, but to simply to do a quick analysis of the FOUR most helpful major takeaways I found from this series, in what I like to call, The Ted Lasso Effect, and how I applied it in a new way in regards as a business owner. In my opinion, Ted impacted his greater community through his work ethic, core beliefs, and interactions with otherscreating a positive impacts, in which I coined it as, The Ted Lasso Effect.

The Ted Lasso Effect… in the viewpoint of this business owner

1. Support your local community… Ted developed a series of habits ( shopping and eating in his local neighborhood ) that followed him through each show and he was consistently displaying those behaviors throughout the entire series! His habits were manifested in his outward behaviors! I said it, it was not an afterthought for Ted to shop local, it was his LIFE! You could simply tell that Ted lived and worked inside his new community.

Make it a habit to shop and support local businesses in Downtown North Wilkesboro. We appreciate your support and we couldn’t continue doing what we do without your support.

EAT, SHOP, PLAY

Our Downtown is a beautiful place to walk, enjoy a meal, shop at your favorite places, and play…

EAT– Ted Lasso was always featured in almost every episode eating meals at his local pub. Eat Local! Support locally owned and operated restaurants in our town. The quality of food is always impeccable!

SHOP– Ted was immersed into his life in the new community and shopped at local stores. He made his own “biscuits “ (cookies) daily for his new boss. She always looked forward to the daily treat Ted presented to her each day.

PLAY-The futbol team town support ran deep for Ted’s professional futbol team. The crowd of supporters poured into the local pub on everyGame Day with sporting team colors. Ted was often a target of their abuse when the team did not win, but the community consistently rallied around the futbol team… “Life is Futbol”, GAME DAY was a major town event each and every game.

“Life is Futbol”Our Downtown doesn’t feature soccer games BUT, think about all the FUN Events that are welcoming you constantly back… Spooktacular, Light Up Downtown, Shop Small Saturday, Christmas Parade, Apple Festival, Art Gallery Events, Concerts on the Deck… and More! Opportunities to PLAY and bring consistent support into our Downtown community is ongoing all year long.

2. Believe… At the beginning of the series, Ted brings out a bright, yellow sign which appears to be scribbled on a sheet of large construction paper, with a single word written on it, BELIEVE. Ted tapes it up with black electrical tape over the entrance to the door to his office.

The yellow BELIEVE sign becomes the symbol that the team views each and every day in the locker room. This was the “outer symbol” to his new future team of his innermost coaching goal, believe in yourself and the concept of perseverance.

As a business owner, belief in your passion for your own business might be intrinsically there, but Perseverance, can be hard and it can waiver during the hard financial times. There are days you want to throw in the towel, especially when economic times are tough.

3. Be A Goldfish… Ted brings us to one of my favorites all time quotes from the entire series. Ted says to one of his futbol players after a rough practice session, “Do you know who the happiest animal in the whole world is, it’s a Goldfish. Goldfish have a 10 second memory. Be A Goldfish”. It’s easy to focus on the negative and lose your sense of focus, or let a grumpy customer ruin your attitude momentarily. At times, it’s good to “Be A Goldfish.”

4. Biscuits with the Boss…Lastly, Ted Lasso spends time getting to know the new people in his surroundings and he develops connections with them. Let’s face it, not many of us would be willing to move 3,000 miles away from home. I could imagine that it was a bit of adjustment moving from the United States to the United Kingdom for Ted … learning to drink tea, or sparkling water or not… lol there’s some fun there but I’ll not give that away… But, as I mentioned earlier under the SHOP section, Ted Lasso made his own “biscuits “ (cookies) daily for his new boss. She always looked forward to the biscuits Ted presented to her each day and readily devoured each one in a glorious manner. Ted enjoyed the conversation with his Boss each morning, learning a bit more about her each and every day. Ted purposefully made connections with each person he encountered. It wasn’t always easy, but he did it.

Ted also sought advice from Keeley, another central character, when he had trouble connecting with a key, star soccer player. Ted worked hard to connect with everyone he met.

Have you ever felt like you are just not connecting with people… they just aren’t getting what you’re saying or asking for? Enough said, right? How many times do we feel like a faceless person when we go into a “box store” and have to use a self checkout or ring a button and no one appears to help you. The lack of human interaction within the established retail business is slowly disappearing to my extreme disappointment… so why go to these places??? 😳 OR have you heard someone say, making an online purchase is “cheaper” than buying it in store???? There’s NO connecting when you purchase online…How can small businesses continue to compete with major online retailers who have more buying power than their smaller counterparts…. Most folks don’t consider that, the more purchases you make inside a small business in your local community will impact our local economy and add to the buying power potential of that small business! Shopping local is a conscious decision that impacts our greater community.

Biscuits with the Boss… At Wilkes County Hardware we don’t have that… but we often have folks who gather around to sit and talk, intentionally making connections with us or others who have gathered in that moment in time.

Final Thoughts

My closing thoughts are wandering… like the soccer ball being played downfield. The rhythm of the Futbol team moving the ball from person to person and then finally a head bump of the ball ⚽️ ump.. launched towards the goalkeeper who by fault, can’t keep the futbol from going in. Score!

We as a team, our community of Wilkes, can find success in building habits and which will become instantaneous behaviors that lead to growing our Downtown community using newly coined phrase, The Ted Lasso EffectSupport local businesses, believe we can do it, Be a goldfish(mistakes will be made, move on), and make connections within your community. We can’t lose the game y’all!

Shop local all year long! Support local restaurants, businesses & retailers. We need your support in 2024

Fall 2023 Photography Favorites

Photography has enabled me to capture a moment in time via the camera lens. I don’t have a sophisticated camera. I use my camera from my phone. I have it wherever I go, and it’s easy to use. If you’re an avid reader of my blog, you may recall, that Photography is a goal for my personal growth this year.

Most of my photos that I share on my blog or in other social media sites are purely everyday places that I have been blessed to see and share with you as my readers. I hope you enjoy the season of Fall through my everyday life “camera lens” in “the hardware life”.

The Fall Leaves

Fall Leaves are dropping everywhere! Here’s a few favorites featuring leaves as the centerpiece of the autumn season.

Vibrant Fall Colors

Vibrant Fall Colors are simply abundant this Autumn. We are so blessed to live in an area with such amazing color everywhere we look.

A Day at the Lake

This year I decided to look for Fall colors in unusual places. The Blue Ridge Mountains are an amazing place to find beautiful views and fall colors. Instead of trekking up the mountain, I wanted to check out some local areas to see how the Fall colors were coming and I wasn’t disappointed! These photos were captured a week or so before peak in our area at W Kerr Scott Lake.

Unusual Finds in the Fall

Sometimes a walk around the neighborhood or just being outside brings us face to face to with the unusual and unexpected. When I find those things, I often take a snapshot of my findings.

Tree trunk covered in leaves
Acorns.. finding an abundance of acorns according to old weather folklore, forecasts a colder winter. Animals will need the acorns to survive the long, cold winter🥶.
Cotton field “leftovers”
Moving bales of cotton, that’s just ONE!
Feather 🪶 in the grass…
Persimmon Tree… old winter folklore tells us that the shape of the persimmon seed can predict the type of winter that is coming. A fork shaped seed inside the persimmon means a milder winter, a spoon shaped persimmon foretells a snowy winter, and a knife shaped seed means a cold, wind biting winter 🥶!

The Pines

This pine is dropping its needles beneath the tree, Pines drop their needles heavily during the Fall months .
Long leaf pine needles
Pine cones nestled in the fallen pine needles

Sunrises

As you may already know, I love a good sunrise or a beautiful sunset. I’m often up to see the sunrise. Sun chasers, here you go… my 2023 Fall sunrise captures.

The Fall Moon

There is simply nothing more intriguing than a full moon. As an educator, teaching during a full moon cycle brought unique challenges. Medical professionals and others have also attested to the Full moon impact upon human behavior. I couldn’t resist the opportunity to capture the moon behind all those clouds after Spooktacular.

“The night walked down the sky and brought the moon to the forefront “.

Foggy Morning Breakdown

The fog was so thick you could cut it with a knife!

Seeking Warmth…

First fire in the wood stove the morning of October 16th inside Wilkes County Hardware.

I hope you enjoyed a small sample of my Fall favorites. Look for your everyday moments and capture them through your life lens, whether you use your camera or not. Happy Fall Y’all! 🍂🍂🍂🍂

The sunlight was just in the right spot, to capture all those beautiful fall colors… one I couldn’t resist.

Under Construction

Ever been on a long road trip, cruising down the interstate and suddenly, traffic comes to a screeching halt?

Road construction is a possibility to your delay. When you see the orange traffic cones, we all know what’s ahead. The traffic that road construction creates, can be challenging. It can lengthen your commute time, and forces you to drive at slower speed. A road work zone that is “under construction “ often diverts traffic in a new direction as the crew safely works in another area.

In a structural/ building development scenario, “under construction”, one would expect to see a structural project that is incomplete… with the ultimate goal, closing the project with full completion, a finished building.

Which brings me to ask you today… Do you currently have anything “under construction”? Visually, the bright orange cones might not be around you, but you might be mentally wearing the bright yellow “hard hat” working as the chief foreman in the construction zone, working on your “under construction goals”.

I recently read that keeping a journal of lists can help with mapping out your goals and thoughts…. These little memo books are a great selling item inside our hardware store.

In early 2023, I didn’t have a vision in what I wanted to accomplish in the coming year. Don’t get me wrong, we all have long term and short term goals. Things seemed…muddled, and a clear vision wasn’t coming easily. Sometimes I think we are in a transitional phase before we launch into a new set of goals. That was the case with me earlier this year.

Often with time, a bit of clarity emerges. The results, a few new WIP’s (works in progress) and all things “under construction” are now being realized. Yes, plans divert and change, just like road construction.

I actually have projects that are “under construction”. Slowly, I’m making small, and defined progress on specific goals I’ve set for myself in 2023. Clipboard in hand, hard hat, and construction checklist ✅. Revealed from my mental clipboard …here’s the short list.

1. Writing and Blogging – In 2023, my blog has a new format (look) that visitors may have noticed. I’m incorporating more bold text words and information so a reader can grab the overall message from the blog post from a visual pre-read. I’m trying to devote more time to write more each week on upcoming blog posts, and also granting myself time away from writing or blogging when I feel uninspired.

2. Photography– This is a brand new goal for me in 2023! I have NEVER physically printed anything from my camera roll. Yes, me, the one with 15,000 plus pictures on her camera roll and I have NEVER printed anything. Until recently… So I’m beginning to focus on my personal photography projects and enjoying the process of making/creating my own art (photography) for my own enjoyment.

Just a few of my photos. Check out my blog post Everyday Summer which is filled with my favorite summer photos
https://hardwarelifewife.com/2023/08/19/everyday-summer-gallery/

3. Weight Loss – ugh! yes, I’m beginning to lose weight . It is hard y’all! 25 pounds lost and now in maintenance mode! I have become much more aware of what I’m eating, practicing portion control, meal planning for lunch, which was problematic for us. Slow, steady progress is what is keeping me motivated .

Veggies are a great way to balance out your hunger!

4. Targeted intentional movement- as Dory said “Just keep swimming “ in Finding Nemo. I have been an active, daily walker for the last several years but I have never intentionally tried to have a daily step goal (7,000 minimum) and to be very cognizant of my movement … not to sit for too long, get up during commercials while watching tv, stand while working instead of sitting and to just keep moving! I don’t meet my goal every single day but I’m much more aware about how many steps I’m making… I’m pumped if I reach over 10,000 plus!

5. Developing my creative side, in a new way… Hand building pottery has been a new challenge… my work is not perfect, but an enjoyable way to spend time learning new things.

My little pumpkin… creating new memories with friends . Thankful for a very patient instructor and friend, Kim Reid!

6. Lastly, Work Goals… We have begun to Re-merchandise key store areas and more! First, Richard and I started with a total change up of our lawn and garden areas, then next to the hardware area.. What could be next???

This year so far, we have refreshed Lawn and Garden area, paints, plumbing, and a few more areas!

I bet we would all agree that living through construction is never easy. Those of us that have lived through a construction project can attest that an ongoing “under construction project” requires planning, perseverance and patience. And we all know that sitting in road construction traffic can test your patience. That being said, projects “under construction” can be taxing …mentally and physically. Change IS and can be hard. Anyone who has ever tried to lose weight or make a lifestyle change can attest that it is not easy but it can be accomplished.

Progress can often be slow and sometimes, even difficult to visualize. Let’s look at a construction analogy .. the first few phases of construction are not often seen… ie.. planning, procurement of materials, and even site preparation… but as you get into the last phases of a construction project, progress becomes more visible.

Morning sunrises can set the tone for the day!

Once the foundation emerges, the core structure is built. With a well built structure and foundation, the longevity of the building is magnified… the ultimate goal, a long lasting structure which can stand the test of time. You can actually begin to visualize success.

Now, I’m not assuming that my WIP’s projects are going to go on without a hitch… like as smoothly as spreading peanut butter on a piece of hot bread that just popped out of the toaster… which results in a smooth, creamy, melting, and warm peanut butter toast, but boy it’s a great way to begin your day. Just keep moving forward.

Blogging About Blogging

This topic is seemingly double talk to most of you today… Blogging about Blogging. I think it is worth the time to explore the methods to my blogging journey.

Since I began my blog in the summer of 2018, I have gotten these questions more than once:

1. How do you put together a blog post?

2. What inspired you to write about this topic?

3. Do you have a list of topics that you write about?

My blogging experience is not vast. I blog simply because I enjoy the creative aspects of blogging. I don’t think my blog will ever become a viral sensation. My blog started out as a way to chronicle our new journey into hardware store ownership. After my retirement from the education world of work, it became a way to continue my creative interests.

My first blog post was extremely short and I used the picture that was generated from the blog builder website, meaning my skill set knowledge of the new blogging techniques was limited. I just recently changed that first photo from that first blog post.

Looking back, at the first several blog posts that I created, I don’t think I included any pictures at all . I simply hadn’t thought about including those! If you look back at my first blog posts, they still don’t have photos and I think I’ll leave them that way so I can visualize my own personal growth.

Pictures add a visual for the reader to enjoy and adds connections between content and images

Over the last few years, pictures have become a greater feature in my blog posts and I have grown to love them as part of the story behind the blog and a nice way to break up large pieces of content within the blog to give the reader a visual break.

When it comes to blogging, I’m a novice. I have completed and published approximately 109 blog posts… and I blog when I have time and the inspiration. I don’t have a huge following but I do have a few, sweet, loyal fans.

A well known blogger once said in an interview, that her biggest fans were not her friends or extended family. I’m not really sure why that is the case. Sometimes folks may not fully understand or appreciate the purpose of a blog’s intent, how to navigate the technical side of a blog, or take the time… well the list is there.

But, in my own personal experience of blog creation/writing, I have found that to be somewhat true, with the definite exception of my Mom and sister-in-law. They are both consistent readers of my blog and are always there to support me and give me a boost when I need it the most. Thank you so much for always taking time to read my blog and sending me feedback Mom & Kimberly!!! It is much appreciated! Love you both dearly! 💕

I am also very lucky that I have dear friends who read and comment on my blog regularly. Thanks for your support! Y’all make my efforts worth the work.

But when it come right down to the nitty gritty of writing, and getting a blog post together, my process of writing has definitely evolved over the last few years. When I first started blogging, I would finish my blog post in one sitting.

Work… not usually the place where I can write. Home is my favorite place to think and create.

Typically now, that is rarely the case. I will write for a brief period of time and then return to that same blog piece later on… it could be weeks between writing sessions or a matter of a few hours. Most of my blog posts are written over a period of a few weeks due to the time consuming nature process of writing and editing. Sometimes it takes a few months to finalize a blog post.

Here’s where most of the magic of my blog happens… in my notes section of my phone. The unfinished drafts, the list of topics in my queue.

The writing is only step ONE! Once that is done, I add in the photos. The photos are selected carefully from my vast collection of photographs on my phone matching the content to the images. I do use stock photos occasionally in order to make the images and content of blog interconnect.

My handy blog tool… my phone. I very rarely use my computer anymore to complete a blog post from start to finish,

My most productive time for writing and editing tends to be in the mornings. I’m more of a morning person and my brain shuts off as the day progresses.

My pups tend to pile into my lap as I work on the blog… my helpers 🐶

The longest span of time that has elapsed for writing /editing a blog post was ONE year! I began writing Women in Entrepreneurship and I didn’t actually publish it until a year later.

I almost didn’t finish this one! I’m so glad I left my draft copy going! If you haven’t read about Women in Entrepreneurial roles in Downtown North Wilkesboro, please check it out!

My topics for a blog post are chosen. They maybe seem random but often it is just things I’m thinking about, discussion topics from things happening inside our hardware store, or I may write about items that I think my readers might enjoy. And yes, I now have topics in queue for a future time.

In the queue… pound cake

Ultimately, I write and create because I simply enjoy it. It is a great way to convey a small piece of our lives to a greater community often sharing a bit of insider knowledge with my readership.

I just read today that the shift is starting in the blogging community to a more focused content approach. I very thankful that my blog is still going strong with a mix of personal insights, thoughts, and a lot of our hardware life. Thanks for sharing and supporting me in this blogging space.

Splashing into 2023 with new personal goals y’all .., stay posted!

May the 4th be with you… I mean the workforce

It would be easy to say that the way we work has changed significantly since Covid-19’s impact. Many people never stopped working during the shutdown, some temporarily worked for home, and others transitioned to full time work at home. Those in the skilled trades were considered essential workers, and their business boomed.

During Covid, it is my belief that the importance of Skilled Trade careers became appreciated, and valued by a larger population. Some might even say that these Skilled Trade careers are going to be “recession” proof… These careers will always be needed.

Elevator technician, Plumbers, Electricians, Welders… and many more career opportunities

But really… aren’t all careers important??? I never have understood why some people place more “value” on some careers than others. We all have value and worth in what we do. No stigma should ever be attached to any job or career path we choose.

Handcrafted woodworking

Today, May 4th is National Skilled Trades Day. This is observed annually on the first Wednesday in May. National Skilled Trades Day was established in 2019 by City Machine Technologies in Youngstown, Ohio. The purpose of the holiday was to raise awareness about the importance of skilled trades workforce in the United States, honor skilled trade workers, and also to create awareness about the skilled trades deficit in the United States.

Skilled trades are the individuals we call to repair our cars, complete complex electrical tasks, do plumbing repairs, build our homes, collect our blood, and ensure the health of our pets.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the US will need close to 4 million skilled laborers to replace the nearly 8 million lost from the labor force during the pandemic. The pandemic created a significant labor shortage, and many Baby Boomers who left the skilled work force industries have chosen not to return. Some opted for early retirement rather than returning into the skilled workforce. Boomers are ready & waiting for a new generation to step into the skilled trades workforce.

For those highly skilled workers in trades such as welders, carpenters, electricians, plumbers, and others, the rate of pay is actually higher on average than college graduates. This rate of pay could grow as the demand for these trade careers increase.

So how do we move to filling the gap in trade based careers ??? The answer is simple in my opinion. We need to talk about it and find solutions. Educators, parents, grandparents, and community leaders, this is a discussion about educating our younger generations about ALL options they have available for career paths.

Beautiful handcrafted items are definitely part of our cultural heritage and legacy of trade based skills

Trade based careers offer a more specialized approach to learning in a specific field, ie plumbing or electrical. The overall cost of a trade based education is significantly less. The time involved in the training can be completed in one to two years versus college, 4 years or more depending on the educational path that is chosen.

College education is great, but every student may not be in the right mindset for university level learning or ready for the debt that it could bring into their future. It sure could save a lot of time, money, and heartbreak by exploring all career options if your teen is not ready for college.

Did you know that student loan debt is the second largest consumer debt factor for many Americans? Mortgage debt ranks first in the consumer debt category.

Student loan debt is estimated at $1.75 trillion with the US federal government holding 92 percent of the debt in student loans.

Approximately 43.4 million people in US have student loan debt(this equates to 1 in 8 Americans). This to me is a heavy dose of information… 😳asking a lot of a young person to tackle… finding a career, paying the student debt, management of family bills and more! Wow!!!

Ultimately, all a parent wishes for their children to have in their chosen career path is happiness, success, financial freedom & security. Right??? Laying out all possibilities in future potential careers today seems to me to be the responsibility of parents, educational staff & other stakeholders in the lives of children.

In closing, isn’t the key to success in a career this… finding what you are passionate about and not treat it as just a job you go to everyday???? Just a thought.

Thanks for reading y’all
